A Message from Dr. Barbat
“I’m grateful to have Dr. Shakfa as part of our team. His experience and dedication allow us to expand the services we provide, while maintaining the same focus on comfort, precision, and compassionate care that defines our practice.”
Dr. Abdul-Sattar Shakfa, often called “Dr. S” by patients and team members, provides surgical, implant, endodontic, and sedation-supported care at Dr. Barbat’s Shelby Township dental office.
For patients who need more involved dental treatment, Dr. Shakfa brings a calm, steady approach. He understands that procedures such as extractions, implants, root canals, and IV sedation can feel intimidating. His goal is to help patients understand what is being recommended, why it is needed, and how treatment can be completed as comfortably and predictably as possible.
Education & Training
Dr. Shakfa completed an oral surgery internship at Indiana University–Purdue in 2005 and earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Detroit Mercy in 2006. During his training, he received the Michigan Dental Association Ambassador Peer Review Award.
He later pursued additional training in pain management and IV sedation at Miami Valley Hospital. This training supports his work with patients who have dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty getting numb, or more complex treatment needs.
Clinical Focus
Dr. Shakfa’s care focuses on procedures that often require advanced planning, precision, and patient comfort. His areas of care include:
- Dental implant placement
- Bone grafting and related surgical procedures
- Wisdom tooth removal
- Tooth extractions
- Root canal therapy
- IV sedation for appropriate patients
- Surgical support for comprehensive dental treatment plans
His role within the practice helps patients receive more of their care in one familiar office, with coordination between Dr. Shakfa, Dr. Barbat, and the rest of the clinical team.
Dental Implants and Surgical Care
Dental implant treatment requires careful evaluation of the bone, surrounding teeth, bite, and long-term restorative plan. Dr. Shakfa focuses on the surgical phase of implant care, including evaluation, grafting when needed, and implant placement.
Because Dr. Barbat and Dr. Shakfa work within the same office, patients benefit from coordinated planning between the surgical and restorative phases of treatment. This is especially helpful when an implant is part of a larger plan to restore function, comfort, or appearance.
IV Sedation and Patient Comfort
Many patients delay dental care because of anxiety, past dental experiences, or fear of surgery. Dr. Shakfa provides IV sedation for appropriate patients so longer or more involved procedures can often be completed with greater comfort.
Before sedation is recommended, the patient’s health history, treatment needs, and safety considerations are reviewed. Throughout the appointment, the patient is monitored carefully. The goal is not simply to complete treatment, but to help the patient feel supported and safe throughout the process.
Communication and Care Philosophy
Patients appreciate Dr. Shakfa’s calm manner, clear explanations, and gentle approach. He takes time to explain the reason for treatment in plain language and helps patients understand their options before moving forward.
His approach fits closely with Dr. Barbat’s philosophy: dental care should be careful, honest, comfortable, and designed for long-term health. Whether he is placing an implant, removing a tooth, performing a root canal, or helping an anxious patient through treatment with sedation, Dr. Shakfa’s focus remains on doing the procedure thoughtfully and helping the patient feel at ease.
Patient Experiences
Patients often come to Dr. Shakfa feeling nervous about surgery, implants, or sedation. Many later describe feeling relieved by how clearly everything was explained and how comfortable the experience was.
Outside the Office
Away from dentistry, Dr. Shakfa enjoys family time, gardening, travel, and continued learning. He brings that same patience and curiosity to his clinical work, where careful planning and steady attention to detail matter every day.
