Root Canal Therapy Can Save Your Tooth
At Dr. Ban R. Barbat, we perform root canal therapy to save teeth that would otherwise be lost to infection or severe damage. A root canal can restore a tooth’s health and function — and contrary to popular belief, it’s typically no more painful than getting a cavity filled.
When Root Canal Therapy Is Needed
Dr. Barbat may recommend a root canal if decay or damage has reached the nerves of your tooth. Symptoms can include deep cavities, cracks, or tooth pain caused by infection. During treatment, the infected tissue is removed, the canals are cleaned and sealed, and in many cases a crown is placed for protection. This prevents the infection from spreading and relieves pain while preserving your natural tooth.
When a Root Canal Needs Retreatment
Though root canal therapy is highly successful, there are times when a treated tooth does not heal as expected. This may happen if all the canals weren’t originally cleaned, if new decay occurs, or if a crown or filling doesn’t seal properly and allows bacteria back in. In these cases, retreatment can often save the tooth.
How Retreatment Works
Retreatment is similar to the original procedure but begins with carefully removing the old restoration and filling material. Dr. Barbat then cleans and disinfects all canal spaces before sealing them again. A final crown or filling is placed afterward to restore strength and prevent reinfection.
